如果清算美國美元的基礎貨幣發行量(Monetary Base)，黃金現在的價值應該為10167美元一安士。在1980年1月，美國曾有機會返回金本位，當時黃金價格850美元，黃金儲備的價值佔基礎貨幣的131%，如上圖所示。
